Jaishankar on the Bangladesh crisis, manifests against TPS

Tensions rose in Sabah as lawmakers met to push for key economic policy changes, reflecting broader concerns from a population grappling with rising costs and geopolitical uncertainty amid Bangladesh's political crisis.


A day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed Parliament on Tuesday on the government's response to Bangladesh's deepening crisis, while opposition parties continued to protest against the burdensome GST on health insurance.

Finance Bill 

Nirmal Sithraman, the Minister of Finance, has submitted a financial bill for the purpose of conducting government financial proposals in 2024-20. The bill was complicated, and the opposition criticized the impact on ordinary citizens. Several MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, protested against the 18% GST on insurance premiums, demanding its withdrawal, while TMC MP Mahua Moitra stressed the need for a balanced approach to direct and indirect taxes, criticising the burden on the middle class. In his defence, BJP MP P.P. Chaudhary argued that lower taxes would lead to greater compliance and economic activity, which would benefit welfare schemes. 

Briefing on Bangladesh Crisis

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed both Houses of Parliament on the political unrest in Bangladesh following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation amid widespread protests. He assured members that India was closely monitoring the situation and was in touch with the Bangladesh Army. Jaishankar said the potential impact of the crisis had put Indian border forces on heightened alert. He expressed concern about the safety of around 19,000 Indians in Bangladesh, including students, many of whom have returned to India.

Political protests and jokes Opposition parties staged protests on the Parliament premises, demanding a reduction in GST on health insurance. Barabanki MP Tanuj Punia joked that even Lord Krishna would find it difficult to buy butter at the current GST rates. The deep hood of the Congress criticized the government for the fact that it was “a separate policy for rich and ordinary people”, claiming that Kharyana was neglected.
